Procedures of Teaching

An Hour with Pak Vidi

Ear Mind Eye Heart

We had a session with Pak Vidi Sukmayadi of the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The session started through introducing ourselves individually. During the session, it was made mention the values and culture of Indonesia. He lets us understand the diversity of culture. With this, we keep in mind the value of respect and understanding.
Above all, the deputy guided us on what should we do. He summarized it all through letting us remember the words Ear, Mind, Eye Heart. A teacher should have an ear to listen, mind to process and understand things, eye to see what are right and a heart to express. With this, I realized that a teacher played difficult and an important role. A teacher should be sensitive enough to what is happening around.

School Orientation

SD Pelita Nusantara here I come”

August 9, 2018. This day is a schedule for school orientation. I can finally visit the school to where I will make my teaching memories with. I am accompanied by Dira one of the student buddies of the program and a student of the University Pendidikan Indonesia.

In order for me to arrive in SD Pelita Nusantara, I need to ride an angkut-a public transportation of the place. It is quite far from the place where I am staying. With this, I need to be conscious with my time. I reflected that right time management is an essential practice for the teachers to perform.

Miss Ratna Sari Dewi S. Pd, the principal of the school told me about the very hectic schedule of the upper level (grades 4,5 and 6), this is due to their upcoming celebration for Indonesia’s Independence Day. In connection with this, the school principal assigned me in primary level (grades 1,2 and 3). I am excited to get to know all of them.

Observation

The observation serves as the guiding point of the pre-service teacher to see how the teaching and learning process is performed in the school. I was sitting at the back of the classroom while the discussion is ongoing. I observed that the medium of instruction is great concentrated on the use of their mother tongue- Bahasa Indonesia as part of emphasizing the lesson. In my mind, I am starting to think that this thing would not be easy, all that I am wondering at the duration of my observation was to ready myself to experience the worst to prevent myself from getting too emotional unrest.

In school break, I was able to roam around the school. I observed that the school is filled with ideal places to play with. There is tree house, small house for little kids, swing, slides, wall brick, little castle, little train. For me, this is because environment is part of learning. It encourages pupils to have enthusiasm in the teaching-learning process. It serves as a chance for them to have enjoyment while they are learning.

Aside from this, the tree house, serves also as a Wi-Fi area for teachers. As I interview Mr. Hansen, a teacher for religion subject. It is a great help for them to have an internet connection for it gives them opportunity to search for information that they needed for instruction. I say that technology indeed became part of the teaching pedagogy especially that we teachers are now dealing with learners who possess 21st century skills. It is part for teachers to become adaptive to these changes not just for their selves as well also for the success of the children. With this, I can say that teachers in SD Pelita Nusantara are equip with skills capable for teaching learners of this generation for they value the importance of becoming better in the teaching profession.

Actual Teaching

Class 3A and 3B

/BR/ and /CR/

I am assigned to primary 1,2 and 3.  In English for grade 3, I taught them the phonics /BR/ and /CR/ . In my preparation, my cooperating teacher let me borrow the book that the pupil is using. During the actual teaching I was accompanied by sir Hansen.  He translates everything that I am trying to say.  I start the class by introducing myself first and letting them share the class what was the previous lesson all about.  I used a picture flashcards in starting my lesson, I was happy because the class became so interested to what will be their lesson for the day.  I made the class guess what the pictures I am showing them are and they were so active because they are so good at identifying it.  Afterwards, I let them guess the topic for the day. They found out that it will be about the ponics /BR/ and /CR/.

In my reflection, the best learning takes place if it is animatedly delivered. I realized that being a teacher requires the talent of being creative. I repeated my class on the second section and did the same thing, but I am no longer accompanied by Mr. Hansen and no one translates my words anymore. The pupils are still active and a lot of them could express their selves in the English language and they were outspoken to their feelings. They also throw a lot of questions in me and it is a challenge thing because they become curious and as a teacher I should satisfy their hunger for knowledge in the teaching-learning process.  Thus a teacher should always come in class ready. In the end, I let the class answer the questions in their workbook in a certain period of time.

Classification of Animals

“How are you today class?” This is my constant line before I start my lesson.  Today my strategy is to let my pupils view a video related to our topic in the animals. Even though the DLP is temporarily cannot be use, I just let my class view a video on my laptop. At first, they were just easy to handle but when the content of the video got their interest, they started to become uneasy from their seats. Some of them will no longer stay from where they are seated and prefer to sit near the laptop for easy viewing. I reflected that there are contents of the lesson wherein you need the technology for the emphasis. Educational videos can be an ideal way in delivering a lesson. Afterwards, the class does the usual thing in bringing out and answering the questions in their workbook.      This time, I let the class to work with their peers it is because it can be a one way to help them understood the lesson more. If they have confusion they can also approach me.

The use of Do and Does

In preparing my lesson for English in the topic “Do and Does” I figured out that it is integrated in the science subject. I reflected that in the teaching and learning process, it has to be multi-disciplinary. The topic “do and does” is related to science because at the introduction part, the context is on the habitat and the nature of the animals. For example “Do pelicans live in the mountain? Thus, the pupils are expected to answer “no they don’t”. For me it is good because the pupils were able to deepen their grammar aspect in English as well also their vocabulary in science. During the discussion, I was conscious with my time because the kids are seems enjoying the input about animals. In result, I had lesser time to explain further the use of “Do and Does”. But despite of this, Miss Intan is there to guide me “ she said that there is nothing to pressure about” I just have to let them answer what was covered during the day. With this, I let the class answer what was covered from the topic.

Prisms

In preparation for teaching them the Prisms, I first watched videos from the youtube. With this, I was able to establish a strategy on how will I teach it to my pupils in an easy approach. On the scheduled time for teaching the class in math, I let the class remember the basic 3D shapes that they could name because I believed that pupil has some ideas in their minds and by that, a teacher can determine if they have an idea on what they will about to tackle. I introduce them the concept of prisms in a deductive way. I first explain to them what are the easy ways to identify that a given 3- dimensional shape is a prism or not. I individually explain each indicator followed by an example. In general, I ask the class to identify which one is a prism or not using the drawings I had in the blackboard. Before I let them answer on their own their workbook, I encourage them to ask me questions because it will be my way also if they are still with me while I am doing my lesson. I reflected that, a teacher should just address the questions of the pupils very well. The remaining time is spent doing their workbook.

Symmetry

In introducing the concept of symmetry to my grade 3 pupils, I presented them two different pictures "symmetrical and asymmetrical" of a house and a table. I throw them the question "which one do you prefer?and why?" . The learners began to draw out there personal decisions and I call pupils to share it in the class. I as a teacherI reflected that the teacher should respect the ideas of learners, teacher should not coerce learners to things that they are not willing about. (But I am not saying that it is applicable to all situations, there are also limits.) After letting them to share in the class,I then started presented the mathematical terms. I prepared a chart for them to answer and determine where is the line of symmetry. After that, I group the class into 3 groups;their task is to finish their differentiated activities given the time of 10 minutes only. As a teacher, I reflected that we should be consistent with the time frame that we will give to our pupils when doing a certain task because it will test their teamwork and ability to finish the task in time. The ten minuets is over, so, we all together checked their outputs.Afterwards, I provided each one of them a worksheet to answer for another 10 minutes.

Class 2A and 2B

Shapes

In my grade two b class I taught them the subject math. The topic given to me is to discuss the shapes. I started my lesson with letting them name what are the basic shapes. I posted a chart containing the pictures of different shapes. As a class, they are ask to classify which belongs to the group. The class became motivated after doing the activity. Then, I introduce the class the idea of vertices and faces in a shape. They are first confused, I explained everything the best as I could and I was happy because at the end, the class was able distinguishes face from vertices. After presenting the concepts I recap what we have tackled through a question and answer portion. The remaining time is given to them to answer their workbook.. However one of the pupils didn’t bring his book so I approached him and told him to bring it next time. In doing my pedagogy in this class, I reflected that teachers have to instill with her enough courage and patience especially when teaching with kids. As a teacher you have to thoroughly explain. Also, by nature they have a lot of energy in the class and at times they do not pay attention. A teacher therefore should establish a good classroom management system. In the end, I was delighted because they were able to answer in time and I was able to somehow manage the class well.  We took some selfies after.

Weather

In my grade2a class, I assisted Mr. Deki. As I was just observing him, he uses most of the time in teaching science using the English language.  Afterwards, he called my attention to let me explain the second part of the lecture which is about the different tools in measuring the weather. Since, I haven’t prepared any instructional materials, I did questioning to the pupils through linking it to their life experiences like for example, “do you love to play outside when it is raining why?” By that, the class started to voiced out their opinions and stand. Using their experiences as basis I was able to deliver my part. Mr Deki also is beside me to guide me through my discussion. I reflected that, one of the best instructional materials is the teacher herself/himself. A teacher can bring out the best if she is flexible and equip with competence and character. Mr Deki reminded me that being a teacher is a calling because not everyone is capable of handling learners. The class did their workbook after.

In my grade 2B class, when Ibu Sallie requested me to take over her class, the topic she gave me is about the weather. Since I was able to assist and observe Mr. Deki doing this lesson in the other section, I build an idea on how I will do it in my way. In motivation, I let them sing along with the video I have prepared. "How's the weather". I was happy because my pupils cooperated with me. After the motivation, I slowly elicit ideas from the pupils on how do describe the different weather. I reflected that pupils in nature has a creative and critical thinking minds. They wanted to express it as much as they like. With this, the teacher should consider classroom management to prevent disregarding the other pupils. I asked them the question "among the weathers which one do you like" some answers the same thing because they wanted to fly a kite in a windy day and some answered sunny because they prefer to see the sun within the day.

Grade 1A and 1B

When I was assisting the class of grade 1b of Mr. Ben , I have noticed that Mr. Ben uses both mother tongue and English in classroom discussion. In my mind, I reflected that the reason behind is for them to have a smooth transition in learning the English language. For me, It is important because according to what Edward Thorndike children learns best when they are ready.

Shapes

I happen to teach in Math about shapes in grade 1A of Miss Nara. In her class, there is one student that barely understand the English language as far also as their age is concerned at the same time, in Miss Nara's class she also has one student who barely understand Bahasa Indonesia. The teaching strategy I used is the one on one technique since the class is filled with few number of pupils and I believe I can handle it. I reflected that if you will be exposed to a class that has its maximum number 30-35 or more, it would be a challenge. I started my lesson by allowing the pupils get their book and open it on the page about the shapes. I did the talking most of the time and slowly explained everything. I handed them a worksheet to work on before they proceed in answering their workbook. Upon letting them answer, I roam around and assist every student because I knew that they needed it before proceeding to the complex part of the lesson. I am happy because the pupils are willing to learn.

The Diversity of Learners

It is true that in a four cornered classroom, every learner that you have, possess uniqueness. I am handling grades 1, 2, 3 and in every grade there are 2 sections. In my 3A class I have a pupil who is unique on his own way, he can catch up easily with the lesson and he is a smart boy. The thing that is different from him is that he cannot manage his emotions. Miss Intan, the adviser of the class told me that he keeps on disturbing his other classmates. While I am doing my lesson on their class in science, I was surprised by what he did. He forcedly took the ruler of his classmate without any reason why. Fortunately, I was able to calm his emotion. In my 2B class, I have a pupil who can express herself using the English language. She utters the words appropriately and with correct enunciation. The thing that is different from her is that she cannot read texts that are written in English. In my 3B class, I have a pupil that is way too different from his other classmates. He is a pupil who needs greater time for instruction intervention because he cannot catch up easily in class. But despite of this, you can see clearly in his eyes that he is eager to learn and I admire him for that.

These encounters that I have witnessed are an indication that I as a soon to become teacher should cater the needs of the learners despite of their distinctions. With this, I should make sure that they are not being left behind in the teaching and learning process by not making any negative judgment to what they are capable of.

Problem Solving

"You cannot give what you do not have", This is a constant reminder in me by our teachers in the Philippines. When I had my teachings, I can observe that children has a lot of things to say rooted from their curious and creative minds. It saddened me when my pupils throw me questions and answer them with a little input about it. True enough, you cannot give what you do not have. To overcome this circumstance of mine. I make sure that I spend more time reviewing and reading further on the topic what I will discuss especially to the subject Science rather than spending my most of the time doing instructional materials. It made me realize that no matter how well those instructional materials are made and you lacked in knowledge meaning you only rely on what is in the book of the learners and limit yourself; the tendency is that you would feel ineffective teacher after all.

"Do what's more important". At the duration of my internship I am also bombarded with things wherein I have to decide which one is the better thing to do. For example, "To be with my co delegates to be out and have dinner wherein I know that they will return late or to ready myself in doing my lesson for tomorrow and to avoid cramming". I have pondered that you should set what are the primary things to do and learn to decide positively. I mean, to learn how to get along with people is an important thing to characterized, it is just also part in us to be mindful- mindful of what will be the consequence of your actions.

Time Management and Organizing Activities

Time Management

An effective time management for teachers is necessary. It will serve as your guide in managing the class effectively and well. My process of exercising conscious control of my time inside the class is divided into phases, I alot 5-10 minutes of my time for the review and warm up activity. 20-25 minutes in the presentation of concepts  and 30 minutes for workbook activities and group activities, conclusion and generalizations.

In an outside the classroom setting. I also spend time doing instructional materials like printing pictures, writing charts, cutting of flash cards, downloading videos for about 4 hours including the time I spent in surfing the internet and finishing the materials. After, I make a review on the lesson and further reading for about 3 hours of my time.

In going to the school, since, I need to ride an angkut to be in SD Pelita Nusantara, I see to it that I am ready to go as early as 6:30. That is my everyday routine because in my mind I anticipate that I may experience traffic and I may have difficulties in looking for an angkut. Thus, I left from the dorm as early as 6:30.

When I am the assigned teacher to teach in a certain subject, I wait outside the room 5 minutes before my turn because it will help me to stay calm and stay focus. If its not yet my time, I assist my cooperating teacher and teachers in primary grades 1 2 and 3 because the principal assigned me to those levels.

Organizing Activities

Video Viewing through the downloading educational videos that relates the lesson.

Identifying and describing pictures through flash cards.

Performing a differentiated activities through groups.

Providing questions to answer through giving them separate printed worksheet.

Picture analysis through throwing questions that relate to their life experiences.

POPCORN activity wherein when the teacher says POP the pupils will stand, CORN the pupils will sit and the one who failed to follow the instruction will be asked by the teacher.

In organizing my activities, I utilize most the use of pinterest, google pictures and youtube in the internet and the teaching journal given by me by the primary teachers.

Making teaching and learning process fun and meaningful

My overall impression in teaching

My pupils used to call me "miss cath". They are my first actual set of pupils as part of my internship. This teaching of mine leave my heart a beautiful mark because they provided me an image of how I should act as a teacher. They taught me to never come in class without being ready with the several questions of the pupils. My cooperating teacher taught me to become patient with the process of becoming a teacher, such that, I as a teacher should be open to any circumstances. Above all, this teaching reminded me of the fact that I will pursue my dream on becoming a teacher.
